SLUG: milwaukee-bucks-2026-offseason-outlook

The Milwaukee Bucks enter the 2026 offseason confronting the franchise’s most significant crossroads since Giannis Antetokounmpo arrived in 2013.

Three Straight Early Exits Trigger Rumors

Since claiming the 2021 championship—their first in half a century—the Bucks have captured only one playoff series. First-round eliminations in 2023, 2024 and 2025 fueled questions about whether Antetokounmpo would seek a new home. Those whispers grew louder last summer after Milwaukee’s brief 2025 postseason ended with Damian Lillard tearing his Achilles tendon.

Lillard Waived, Turner Signed

Facing the prospect of paying Lillard a maximum salary while he rehabbed throughout 2025-26, Milwaukee waived the guard and stretched more than $112 million over five years. The maneuver created enough cap space to land free-agent center Myles Turner, one of the market’s top unrestricted options.

On-Court Struggles Continue

The gambit failed to spark a turnaround. Antetokounmpo battled injuries, and Turner had difficulty adjusting after a decade with Indiana. A seven-game losing streak in November left the Bucks 8-12; they never reached .500 again and finished with their worst record since Antetokounmpo’s rookie campaign.

Giannis Saga Dominates Headlines

Throughout the season Antetokounmpo reiterated his affection for Milwaukee yet emphasized that title contention remains his priority. Tension escalated when co-owner Wes Edens told ESPN the team would either extend or trade the two-time MVP, and when the club kept Giannis sidelined with a knee issue he felt had healed. The NBA reviewed the medical dispute and cleared the franchise.

Trade discussions with multiple teams—including brief, fruitless talks with the New York Knicks—occurred before February’s deadline, but management ultimately stood pat.

Bright Spot: Ryan Rollins

Second-year guard Ryan Rollins provided a rare highlight, averaging 17.6 points, 5.6 assists and 1.5 steals while shooting 47.2% from the field, 40.6% from three and 79.6% at the line—numbers that earned him legitimate Most Improved Player consideration.

Coaching Change Kicks Off Offseason

Milwaukee’s first move after the season was dismissing head coach Doc Rivers. Former Memphis Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins agreed to a six-year contract reportedly worth more than $10 million annually.

Decision Time

Owners Wes Edens and Jimmy Haslam have publicly stated the club intends to resolve Antetokounmpo’s future through either a long-term extension or a trade. With speculation hovering over every roster decision, the Bucks must now choose a definitive path—re-tooling around their superstar or beginning a rebuild for the first time in more than a decade.
