The San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks are set to meet in the NBA Finals for the first time since their 1999 clash, renewing a rivalry that resurfaced briefly during December’s NBA Cup championship game.

Neither side is leaning on that mid-season result. “We’re the same but different team, and same with them,” Knicks coach Mike Brown told Newsday’s Ben Dickson. “You can tell that they’ve matured as a group. You can tell we’ve matured as a group.”

The Spurs squad that fell in the Cup final now looks vastly different, having knocked out the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder in seven games to reach the Finals. Back in December, rookie center Victor Wembanyama was easing his way back from injury and logged only 25 minutes; since then, he has emerged as arguably the league’s most imposing two-way force.

New York is expected to deploy OG Anunoby on Wembanyama, with Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart offering help defense. San Antonio’s roster presents additional challenges: DeAaron Fox, Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, Devin Vassell and Julian Champagnie all add scoring, playmaking and outside shooting that make it tough for the Knicks to hide weaker defenders.

Several league observers told ESPN that the Knicks’ floor spacing could provide a critical edge. Karl-Anthony Towns’ long-range shooting may draw Wembanyama away from the basket, potentially creating driving lanes for Jalen Brunson and the rest of New York’s offense.

Oddsmakers list the Spurs as early favorites, yet many around the league view the series as far closer than the betting line indicates. San Antonio has been one of the NBA’s hottest teams for months, and New York has been nearly as strong, setting up a Finals matchup that appears far more competitive than anticipated just weeks ago.
