New York Knicks owner James Dolan, who seldom sits for interviews, spoke with the New York Post’s Steve Serby in the run-up to the 2026 NBA Finals, revisiting January comments in which he labeled this season “title or bust.”
Why the public championship mandate
Dolan said the organization embraced sky-high expectations the moment it dismissed Tom Thibodeau and hired Mike Brown last summer. The club had just reached the 2025 Eastern Conference finals, and Dolan felt the next logical step was a championship run. “You don’t make a change unless you expect to do better,” he told Serby.
Selecting Mike Brown
Although several candidates were linked to the vacancy, Dolan emphasized that president of basketball operations Leon Rose identified Brown as the best fit. According to the owner, the search prioritized collaboration, strategic flexibility and in-game adaptability. After interviewing “a lot of different guys,” Rose settled on Brown, and Dolan signed off. “Leon did all the work,” he said.
Landing Karl-Anthony Towns
The Knicks acquired Karl-Anthony Towns before the 2024-25 campaign after losing Isaiah Hartenstein in free agency. Dolan explained that collective-bargaining limits prevented New York from matching outside offers to Hartenstein, creating an opening at center. He already had a relationship with Towns and knew the former Timberwolves star wanted to play in New York, calling the opportunity “heaven-sent.”
Paying the price for Mikal Bridges
New York surrendered five future first-round picks to obtain Mikal Bridges, a cost Dolan acknowledged required “a little thought.” The owner said the front office viewed Bridges as a cornerstone and believed those selections would fall outside the lottery for the foreseeable future, lessening their value compared with an established, two-way starter.
Why Leon Rose was hired
Dolan also reflected on bringing in Rose, a longtime agent, to run basketball operations in 2020. He credited Rose’s ability to attract talent and foster a family-style culture, noting that Rose and executive William Wesley emphasize collaboration throughout the organization.
The Knicks, coming off their deepest postseason run in 25 years and now led by Brown, Towns and Bridges, will open the Finals later this week with the owner’s championship directive still in place.
