The Brooklyn Nets waived guard Keon Johnson on Wednesday, trimming their roster before the start of training camp.
Johnson, 23, appeared in 79 games for Brooklyn last season and started 56. He posted career highs with 10.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.0 steal in 24.4 minutes per game.
The move comes as Johnson’s role was expected to shrink. Restricted free agent Cam Thomas accepted his qualifying offer, the Nets added several first-round rookies, and the club acquired another shooting guard, Kobe Bufkin, from Atlanta earlier in the week.
Johnson’s 2025-26 salary of $2,349,578 carried only $271,614 in guaranteed money. The guarantee would have increased to $760,520 had he remained on the roster through opening night.
With Johnson gone, Brooklyn has 20 players under contract for camp. The team still plans to finalize a deal with Ricky Council IV, who reached an agreement in early August.
The 6-foot-5 wing was selected in the first round of the 2021 draft by the Clippers and later spent time with the Trail Blazers. In 161 career games, he has shot 37.9 percent from the field and 32.4 percent from three-point range.
Johnson will become a free agent on Friday unless he is claimed off waivers.
