The Dallas Mavericks are proceeding deliberately in their hunt for a new head coach, general manager Mike Schmitz told reporters this week.

“We’re being very thorough in our approach and just continuing to stick to our process and evaluate everything,” Schmitz said, according to DallasHoopsJournal. “We don’t have an exact timeline for it.”

Dallas dismissed Jason Kidd earlier this month after team president Masai Ujiri called for a fresh start in the wake of one of the most turbulent periods in franchise history. While many around the league expect the club to prioritize an experienced candidate, Schmitz indicated the Mavericks remain open to a wide range of options.

“Our goal is to focus on a handful of the traits we’re looking for, evaluate the market and make the best decision possible for the franchise,” he said. “Obviously, we understand that this is a huge decision and one we’re going to do everything we can to get right.”

The search unfolds at a critical juncture for the organization. Dallas has missed the playoffs in back-to-back seasons and is now building around reigning Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg while also preparing for the return of guard Kyrie Irving, who recently said he is nearing full health following ACL surgery.

Since arriving in Dallas, Ujiri has already reshaped parts of the front office by hiring Schmitz as GM and signaling that further changes are likely. Selecting the next head coach remains the most significant move on the team’s agenda.
