A Yahoo Sports discussion on Thursday outlined a long-shot offseason blueprint in which the Cleveland Cavaliers attempt to add both LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo to their roster.
NBA analyst Tom Haberstroh, appearing on the “Yahoo Sports Daily” podcast, proposed that Cleveland could open the summer by offering Evan Mobley and future draft picks to the Milwaukee Bucks for Antetokounmpo. After that, the Cavaliers would pursue a reunion with James, whose contract status with the Los Angeles Lakers is expected to dominate offseason headlines.
Under Haberstroh’s projection, the Cavaliers would roll out a star-packed starting five of James Harden, Donovan Mitchell, LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jarrett Allen.
The idea comes with major roadblocks. Milwaukee has given no indication it intends to move Antetokounmpo, and it remains unclear whether a package centered on Mobley and a first-round pick would satisfy the Bucks. Meanwhile, James must decide whether to remain with the Lakers or explore free agency, a choice that could depend on Los Angeles’ offseason moves.
Even so, Haberstroh characterized the LeBron-Giannis combination as the most ambitious path Cleveland could imagine as teams across the league begin sketching out summer possibilities.
