Cleveland — The Cavaliers are examining cap-friendly avenues that could open the door for LeBron James to make a third stint with the franchise, league sources told NBA reporter Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson.
Several executives pushed back on recent online chatter claiming James is demanding a maximum contract to return, calling the rumor “completely BS,” according to Robinson. Team sources also indicated Cleveland has no plans to extend a max offer.
Robinson outlined a potential blueprint in which:
- James Harden opts out of his current deal and restructures at a lower figure, creating additional cap flexibility.
- Cleveland sheds salary by exploring trades involving Dean Wade, Max Strus or other roster pieces.
- James agrees to join for the taxpayer mid-level exception or arrives via a sign-and-trade with the Los Angeles Lakers.
While those contingencies remain hypothetical, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported on “The Hoop Collective” podcast that James and his representatives are still awaiting a formal contract proposal and roster plan from the Lakers before weighing alternatives. Windhorst added that league personnel continue to mention the Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors as plausible destinations should the four-time champion leave Los Angeles.
James, 41, has not publicly indicated whether he intends to stay with the Lakers, test free agency, or retire. Until a decision is announced, Cleveland is expected to stay linked to any discussion about his future.
