Cavaliers to Keep Head Coach Kenny Atkinson for 2026-27 Season

The Cleveland Cavaliers will retain Kenny Atkinson as head coach for the 2026/27 campaign, according to a report by Joe Vardon of The Athletic.
Following a four-game sweep by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals—during which Cleveland was outscored by 77 points—there had been speculation about potential coaching changes. Team sources told Vardon that no significant adjustments are planned for either the coaching staff or the front office this offseason.
Atkinson, hired in 2024 to replace J.B. Bickerstaff, has guided the Cavaliers to a 116-48 regular-season record (.707) over two seasons and was named NBA Coach of the Year for 2024/25.
Despite that regular-season success, postseason results have fallen short of expectations. Cleveland exited in the second round as the East’s No. 1 seed last year and needed Game 7 victories over the Raptors and Pistons this spring before being swept by New York.
The coach faced scrutiny during the Knicks series, notably for declining to call timeouts or alter defensive matchups in Game 1 as Jalen Brunson repeatedly attacked James Harden during a 22-point comeback. Atkinson also drew attention by saying his team had “analytically earned” two expected wins after Game 3.
Owner Dan Gilbert, who publicly backed Atkinson earlier Monday, has three years remaining on the coach’s contract. ESPN’s Shams Charania and Jamal Collier likewise reported that top team officials continue to hold Atkinson in high regard.
Star guards Donovan Mitchell and Harden expressed support for Atkinson following the Game 4 loss. Gilbert’s post-series statement praised the club’s progress while emphasizing that “we’re nowhere near where we need to be,” hinting that roster moves are more likely than front-office or coaching changes.
“I have confidence in myself, first of all, confidence in the group,” Atkinson said Monday when asked about his job security. “Our front office has done a phenomenal job giving us a great roster. Obviously, there’ll be decisions to be made like every summer, but I think we’re doing pretty well with those decisions since I’ve been here. Just keep trusting—trusting our process, trust our collaboration.”
