CLEVELAND — Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert offered a blunt assessment moments after the team’s 130-93 loss to the New York Knicks in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals on Monday night.
“We took a step ahead this spring, but we are nowhere near where we need to be,” Gilbert posted on X. “I can’t thank the fans enough for the support this year. We will dig in all summer and do everything we possibly can to take the next step. We will grind until we get there.”
The defeat completed a sweep, sending Cleveland out of the postseason by an average margin of 19.2 points per game. Gilbert also used the post to congratulate the Knicks and wish them well in the NBA Finals.
The early exit sets up a pivotal offseason for the franchise. Decisions are pending on guard James Harden and several rotation players, while outside speculation has surfaced about head coach Kenny Atkinson and the overall roster composition.
After Monday’s loss, All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell publicly endorsed Atkinson. “I love Kenny, we all love Kenny,” Mitchell said. “People are gonna be people, but I ride or die with him.” The guard also reiterated his commitment to Cleveland, adding, “I love it here. We have unfinished business.”
