Hornets Emerge as Possible Trade Destination if Rockets Shop Jabari Smith Jr.

The Charlotte Hornets could become a surprise bidder for forward Jabari Smith Jr. should the Houston Rockets entertain trade offers, according to a scenario outlined by Bleacher Report’s Dan Favale.

Favale listed Smith as a hypothetical target who might fit Charlotte’s roster construction. The writer argued that Houston has “yet to play him alongside proper table-setters,” while the Hornets can surround the 23-year-old with playmakers such as LaMelo Ball, Brandon Miller and rookie Kon Knueppel.

Smith’s offensive efficiency has fluctuated through his early NBA seasons, but analysts have long suggested his scoring could grow next to high-level facilitators. Charlotte’s trio of creators presents a setting in which the No. 3 overall pick from the 2022 draft would not need to manufacture difficult shots on every possession.

The Rockets are not known to be shopping Smith, and any willingness to discuss the 6-foot-11 forward remains speculative. Nevertheless, Houston may face broader roster decisions after another quick playoff exit despite entering the postseason with lofty expectations around Kevin Durant and a veteran core.

For Charlotte, Smith’s age aligns with the organization’s rebuilding timeline, making the former Auburn standout a logical piece if Houston seeks changes and the Hornets pursue additional front-court scoring.

While no talks have been reported, league front offices routinely explore similar ideas when balancing youth, contracts and roster depth. On paper, Smith in a Hornets uniform is a scenario observers find increasingly plausible.
