NBA Analyst Suggests Hawks Pursue Jalen Williams in Hypothetical Deal

Bleacher Report writer Dan Favale has outlined a scenario in which the Atlanta Hawks attempt a major trade for Oklahoma City Thunder wing Jalen Williams, even though both clubs are widely expected to keep their current cores intact.
Favale’s proposal, published this week, stresses that such a move remains highly improbable. Still, he argues Atlanta should be prepared if Oklahoma City ever reconsiders Williams’s status. “The Thunder’s payroll is about to balloon,” Favale wrote, adding that executive vice president Sam Presti could eventually value “depth and optionality over a three-max-star model” should roster costs climb.
Williams, 25, has emerged as one of the league’s top two-way forwards. The All-Star averaged 17.1 points, 5.5 assists and 4.6 rebounds this season while sharing the spotlight with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren. Oklahoma City’s success without him at stretches and the rise of guard Ajay Mitchell were cited by Favale as reasons the front office might eventually consider reallocating resources.
Atlanta, meanwhile, controls multiple future draft picks and has several young players who could interest the Thunder if trade talks ever opened. Favale’s piece notes that shifting salary-cap rules, second-apron penalties and long-term flexibility have already prompted unexpected moves elsewhere—pointing to last offseason, when the Dallas Mavericks shocked observers by moving Luka Dončić.
For now, league insiders still view Williams as a foundational piece in Oklahoma City, and there is no indication either franchise is negotiating. Favale’s exercise highlights how front offices increasingly weigh financial constraints against roster construction, keeping previously unthinkable possibilities on the table.
