The Orlando Magic have started interviewing candidates to replace former head coach Jamahl Mosley, and multiple league sources describe Billy Donovan as the leading contender, according to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line.
Donovan, who spent the past six seasons guiding the Chicago Bulls before separating from the franchise last month, has already spoken with Magic president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman and is expected to meet with team executives in person soon, the report states.
While veteran coach Tom Thibodeau has been linked to the vacancy, Fischer reports that Orlando has not contacted him and he has not been included in the current interview cycle. Thibodeau has been out of work since being dismissed by the New York Knicks last summer.
Los Angeles Clippers assistant coach Jeff Van Gundy is on the Magic’s list of potential candidates, according to Fischer and fellow journalist Marc Stein. Van Gundy previously served as head coach of the New York Knicks and Houston Rockets from 1995 to 2007.
Although the organization is prioritizing experienced coaches, Spurs associate head coach Sean Sweeney is also expected to interview for the position, Fischer adds. The 41-year-old Sweeney is considered a top option to replace Donovan in Chicago as well.
