NBA insider Marc Stein used his weekend Substack column to examine several key storylines around the league, starting with LeBron James’ uncertain future.

LeBron James

• Stein and league contacts believe the 41-year-old is more likely than not to return for a record 24th NBA season in 2026/27, though no final decision appears imminent.
• James becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer and would prefer to stay with the Lakers. Los Angeles shares that interest but would seek a salary well below the $52.6 million he earned this season, a discount James has never previously accepted.
• Potential alternatives such as the Warriors, Cavaliers, Knicks and Clippers are not positioned to offer significant cap room, prompting speculation that retirement could remain on the table.

Philadelphia 76ers Front Office Search

• Bob Myers, president of sports for Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, recently said the team’s next head of basketball operations will wield “a lot of authority,” though he expects to stay involved in major decisions.
• Around the league, many believe Myers will consider Hawks general manager Onsi Saleh, who previously worked with Myers in Golden State. Stein hears Saleh is likely to remain in Atlanta, and Philadelphia would first need permission to speak with him after his runner-up finish in Executive of the Year voting.
• The Sixers have also been linked to Tim Connelly, but Minnesota’s president of basketball operations is under contract for another season and the Timberwolves have shown no willingness to grant interviews.
• Regardless of the external search, chatter persists that assistant GM Jameer Nelson could be promoted. Consultant Neil Olshey and Thunder executive Vince Rozman have likewise been mentioned for the vacancy.

Orlando Magic Coaching Targets

• Orlando is prioritizing an experienced head coach to replace Jamahl Mosley. Billy Donovan remains a leading candidate, despite withdrawing from the same job in 2007 to return to the University of Florida.
• Veteran coach Tom Thibodeau is also on the Magic’s radar.

Portland Trail Blazers Coaching Search

• Sources tell Stein that Timberwolves assistant Micah Nori has joined Portland’s list of coaching candidates.
• Former Blazers head coach Terry Stotts, now a Warriors assistant, has informed the organization he would welcome another stint on the Portland bench.

Boston Celtics and Giannis Antetokounmpo Rumors

• League observers continue to link the Celtics to Giannis Antetokounmpo, citing president of basketball operations Brad Stevens’ recent comment: “One of the things that we’ve got to figure out is how to have more of an impact at the rim, and I think we do need to add to our team to do that.”

The Stein Line column was published Sunday.
