Jayson Tatum, still rehabbing from the torn Achilles that limited him for most of the 2025-26 campaign, told the “Glass Half Full” podcast with Craig Melvin that his objective for 2026-27 is clear: win another title and lift the NBA Finals MVP trophy.

Tatum helped Boston capture the 2024 championship, but teammate Jaylen Brown claimed MVP honors in both the Eastern Conference finals and the NBA Finals after outscoring and outshooting Tatum in the series against Dallas. While Tatum’s playmaking and defense proved crucial, his scoring touch faltered.

Health Update

The 28-year-old forward, sidelined by soreness in his left knee for Game 7 of this season’s first-round loss to Philadelphia, expects to train normally this summer instead of navigating another lengthy rehab. Tatum said he even pressed doctors about whether an MRI taken the day before the Achilles tear could have revealed any danger.

“Your tendon looked perfectly healthy. It was just an unlucky moment,” he recalled the medical staff telling him—an answer Tatum admitted was tough to accept after strict adherence to treatment, strength work and game-day routines.

Roster Upgrades vs. Repeater Tax

Team president Brad Stevens acknowledged at his end-of-season news conference that Boston needs more talent, but adding it without triggering the repeater tax will be tricky. The Celtics ducked under the tax line this year and must remain below it in at least two of four seasons to avoid harsher penalties.

The club already has roughly $181 million committed to 11 players for 2026-27, leaving about $19 million of space under the projected $200.5 million tax threshold.

Free-Agent and Trade Targets

In a mailbag for MassLive, Brian Robb floated big-name possibilities such as LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Obi Toppin, while noting the limited cap flexibility. He labeled Knicks center Mitchell Robinson and Trail Blazers center Robert Williams as the top free-agent pivots, though their current teams can outbid Boston. Magic center Moritz Wagner and Bulls big man Zach Collins were mentioned as less costly alternatives, but Robb suggested the Celtics may be better served exploring the trade market.

Brown Reflects on Early Benchings

Jaylen Brown, meanwhile, recounted being benched early in his career during an appearance on the “State of the Game” video series, a memory that continues to shape his approach heading into next season.

The Celtics now enter an offseason balancing Tatum’s championship aspirations with financial constraints and a still-evolving roster.
