The Los Angeles Lakers are preparing for an eventful 2026 offseason, with team and league insiders anticipating aggressive moves on the trade market as the club looks to reinforce its roster around superstar guard Luka Doncic.

According to The Athletic, the front office led by general manager Rob Pelinka is willing to shop three first-round selections—the No. 25 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft along with its 2031 and 2033 first-rounders—to secure impact players. The organization has previously shown interest in New Orleans Pelicans wings Trey Murphy III and Herb Jones, though the Pelicans have not indicated whether either player is available.

Main priorities

Los Angeles is focused on adding two-way wings, a rim-running center who complements Doncic, stronger point-of-attack defense, and additional perimeter shooting. Deandre Ayton’s mixed fit last season has prompted the Lakers to evaluate other center options despite several productive stretches from the veteran big man.

Marcus Smart situation

Guard Marcus Smart, one of the Lakers’ key role players, holds a $5.39 million player option for next season. If the 32-year-old declines the option and enters free agency, the Lakers are expected to pursue a new deal to keep his defensive presence and leadership in the backcourt.

Armed with salary-cap flexibility, multiple draft assets and a clear mandate to maximize Doncic’s prime years, Pelinka and his staff are set to explore trades, the draft and free agency in the coming months.
