The Chicago Bulls are close to adding longtime Orlando Magic executive Stephen Mervis as senior vice president of basketball operations, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.
Charania reported that the two sides are finalizing an agreement that will move Mervis from Orlando to Chicago. The Bulls have not issued an official announcement.
Veteran front-office track record
Mervis joined the Magic in 2014 after a stint as a basketball operations intern with the Indiana Pacers. He was first hired in Orlando as special assistant to the general manager and climbed the organizational ladder over the next 12 years, holding titles that included assistant director of basketball strategy, director of basketball strategy, vice president of basketball strategy, and, most recently, assistant general manager.
Orlando credited Mervis with contributing to every aspect of basketball operations, with a particular focus on salary-cap management, long-term planning, and collective bargaining agreement matters. He also helped oversee portions of the team’s scouting operation.
Part of Bryson Graham’s new group
Reporter K.C. Johnson of Chicago Sports Network noted that Mervis quickly became a key target for the Bulls once Bryson Graham accepted the role of executive vice president of basketball operations. Chicago is also expected to hire Acie Law as vice president of player personnel, giving Graham two top lieutenants as he reshapes the front office.
No timetable has been provided for official announcements on any of the moves.
