Additional medical evaluations have determined that Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic sustained a more serious left hamstring injury than initially disclosed, league sources told The Athletic.
Doncic, 27, was diagnosed with a Grade 2 strain after an April 2 MRI in Dallas. Subsequent tests conducted in Spain indicated a deeper, more severe tear, which prevented him from returning during the 2026 postseason. The Lakers were swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the second round.
According to the report, Doncic has resumed the strict offseason diet and conditioning program that reshaped his body last summer and is currently pain-free. Team officials do not expect any restrictions on his summer training as he prepares for the 2026-27 campaign.
Following the Lakers’ elimination, Doncic revealed he had been given an eight-week recovery timetable in Spain, placing his potential return at least two weeks beyond the team’s second-round exit. Los Angeles would have needed to advance to the Western Conference Finals for him to see the court.
The four-time All-NBA guard also announced he will not represent Slovenia in this year’s FIBA World Cup qualifiers, citing recovery and a desire to spend additional time with family while pursuing full custody of his two daughters.
