The Philadelphia 76ers have dismissed president of basketball operations Daryl Morey despite two costly seasons remaining on his contract, the organization confirmed Tuesday.
Bob Myers, president of sports for Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, will oversee basketball operations on an interim basis and spearhead the hunt for Morey’s successor. According to The Stein Line’s Jake Fischer, Myers plans to step back into his advisory post once a new lead executive is hired.

Myers is expected to evaluate internal staff alongside external contenders. One name not in the mix, per Fischer, is National Basketball Players Association executive director Andre Iguodala, whose union term ends next month.
Ownership backed mid-season trade
A team source told Fischer that the February deal sending rookie guard Jared McCain to Oklahoma City for draft assets — highlighted by a 2026 first-round pick — was approved by ownership and was not the final trigger for Morey’s exit. Philadelphia also shed luxury-tax obligations in the move and holds the Thunder’s No. 22 selection in June’s draft, a pick the club expects to yield an NBA-ready prospect.
Roster questions surrounding Embiid, George
League observers believe the Sixers’ most viable long-term path is rebuilding around guards Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe. Moving reigning MVP Joel Embiid, however, is considered difficult; the center still has three years and $188 million guaranteed. One concept floated by rival executives — a swap with Sacramento for Domantas Sabonis — is viewed as highly improbable.
Forward Paul George could be more attainable. After shooting 49.3 percent from three in the playoffs, George enters the offseason with one guaranteed year left on his max deal and a player option to follow. Should he decline that option in favor of a lower-starting extension, interested teams might pursue a trade. Fischer compares his market to Trae Young’s last offseason, when Atlanta neither gained nor surrendered draft picks but added two cost-friendly contracts in its trade with Washington.
Coaching staff adjustments ahead
Head coach Nick Nurse will retain his role, though several assistants are on expiring contracts and staff changes are anticipated, Fischer adds.
