Los Angeles Lakers icon Magic Johnson says Michael Jordan, not LeBron James, remains his choice as the greatest basketball player of all time.

Speaking on a recent episode of the “Earn Your Leisure” podcast, Johnson praised both superstars but recounted a signature moment from the 1991 NBA Finals—Jordan’s mid-air switch-hand layup against the Lakers—as the decisive image in his personal ranking.

“I love LeBron,” Johnson said, “but when Michael took off with his tongue out, switched to the left hand and scored, there’s nobody who’s been able to do that. LeBron is a bad boy too, but he’s not Michael.”

Johnson’s view comes despite his instrumental role in bringing James to Los Angeles in 2018 while serving as the team’s president of basketball operations. James delivered a championship in 2020, giving him four NBA titles and strengthening his résumé in the ever-debated GOAT conversation.

The 64-year-old Hall of Famer battled Jordan on the court and won five championships with the Lakers during the 1980s. His firsthand experience, he said, shapes his preference. “Don’t get it twisted,” he added, “I love LeBron, but no, no.”

Extended Debate Continues

The question of Jordan versus James remains subjective, with supporters on both sides citing rings, longevity and era-specific competition. James, now in his 21st NBA season, has shown no signs of slowing down in Los Angeles, leaving room for further accomplishments before he retires.

Chandler Draws Magic Comparison for Doncic

Elsewhere around the league, former NBA center Tyson Chandler compared Luka Doncic to Johnson, saying the Dallas Mavericks star possesses a similar ability to orchestrate an offense. Chandler’s remarks highlight ongoing interest in which new talents might shape future GOAT debates.
