The Dallas Mavericks have appointed Mike Schmitz as general manager, the club announced Tuesday in a press release. Schmitz will work under newly hired president Masai Ujiri and will lead the day-to-day operations of the basketball department.
Schmitz departs the Portland Trail Blazers, where he served as assistant general manager since 2022 after five years as a draft analyst at ESPN. In Portland, he handled player evaluation, scouting, roster strategy and organizational planning under general manager Joe Cronin.
“Mike is one of the most respected evaluators and basketball minds in the NBA,” Ujiri said in a statement. “He brings intelligence, discipline, humility and a relentless work ethic to everything he does. Just as importantly, he understands how to build an aligned, collaborative culture across every part of a basketball organization.”
Schmitz’s résumé also includes assistant coaching duties with the Ugandan national team beginning in 2018 and a stint as video coordinator for the G League’s Bakersfield Jam during the 2012-13 season. He started his scouting career with DraftExpress.
During his time with the Trail Blazers, the franchise selected players such as Shaedon Sharpe, Scoot Henderson, Donovan Clingan and Yang Hansen. Last month, the NBA suspended Schmitz and fellow assistant GM Sergi Oliva for two weeks without pay after the league ruled that Portland had contacted Hansen in 2023 before he was eligible for the draft.
