The Cleveland Cavaliers let another opportunity slip away Tuesday night, losing 107-97 to the Detroit Pistons and returning to Ohio trailing 0-2 in their first-round series.
Early turnovers again proved costly. Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen coughed up the ball on Cleveland’s first possessions, and James Harden and Donovan Mitchell followed suit. By halftime, the Cavaliers had nine giveaways and faced a steep climb against a 60-win opponent.
Harden never found a groove, missing eight of his first nine shots while recording more turnovers than assists. Free throws—one of the few consistent offensive outlets—kept Cleveland within range despite a cold start from beyond the arc.
The visitors steadied themselves after intermission. Cleaner ballhandling and a surge from Mitchell, who poured in 31 points, briefly nudged the Cavaliers ahead in the fourth quarter.
The lead vanished quickly. Tobias Harris and Duncan Robinson knocked down timely jumpers, and Cade Cunningham orchestrated Detroit’s finish with 25 points and 10 assists. The Pistons closed on a decisive run, sealing the win and tightening their grip on the matchup.
Cleveland heads home needing two straight victories to even the series, its season suddenly on the brink.
