Washington Wizards wing Bilal Coulibaly had surgery Friday to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. The injury occurred while he was competing for France at EuroBasket 2025.

The Wizards confirmed the procedure but did not provide a recovery timetable, stating only that the 21-year-old’s status will be updated when appropriate.

Coulibaly, the No. 7 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, started all 59 games he played last season, averaging 12.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.3 steals in 33.0 minutes. He shot 42.1% from the field and 28.1% from three-point range.

During EuroBasket, the 6-7 forward posted 6.3 points and 4.3 rebounds in 18.8 minutes over six contests. France was eliminated in the round of 16 by Georgia, a game in which Coulibaly did not score.

His absence to start the NBA season could create additional opportunities on the wing for Cam Whitmore, Will Riley, AJ Johnson, Dillon Jones and Malaki Branham during training camp and preseason.
