The Boston Celtics’ August agreement with head coach Joe Mazzulla is believed to run six years, according to NBA insider Marc Stein. The club announced a “multi-year” extension at the time but did not disclose exact terms.
“There is a belief in coaching circles the new deal is a six-year pact, along the lines of the six-year pact that current Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens initially signed when he became Boston’s coach in 2013,” Stein reported Monday.
Mazzulla Grateful for New Commitment
Mazzulla, 37, called the extension “a blessing.”
“I would not be here without my faith, my wife, and my children,” he said in a statement. “We are thankful for the partnership with our ownership groups, Brad’s mentorship, and the support of our staff. Most importantly, I am grateful for the players I have been able to coach the past three seasons. I look forward to competing for the Celtics and the city of Boston.”
Rapid Success on the Sidelines
The Rhode Island native has guided Boston to the playoffs in each of his three seasons, capping the 2023-24 campaign with the franchise’s 18th NBA championship. He became the youngest head coach to win the Finals since 35-year-old Bill Russell captured the 1969 title as a player-coach.
Under Mazzulla, the Celtics have recorded at least 57 victories every year.
From Assistant to Lead Bench Boss
Mazzulla joined the organization as an assistant in 2019 and was promoted to interim head coach when Ime Udoka was suspended before the 2022-23 season. He later received the full-time post.
In March of last season, he was named Eastern Conference Coach of the Month after Boston went 14-1, including 8-0 on the road. The Celtics finished 61-21, captured their 26th Atlantic Division crown, and earned the East’s No. 2 seed behind the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Boston eliminated the Orlando Magic in five games in the first round but fell to the New York Knicks in six games in the conference semifinals.
The Celtics open the 2025-26 season Wednesday at TD Garden against the Philadelphia 76ers.
