Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Jimmy Haslam wants clarity on Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future before this year’s NBA Draft, indicating the franchise must know whether to pursue an extension or explore a trade.

“I just think before the draft is a natural time,” Haslam told TMJ4. “If Giannis does play somewhere else, then we ought to get a lot of assets, and it’s [general manager] Jon Horst’s job to do it. If he’s here, then you build the team differently.”

Haslam’s comments strengthen remarks from fellow co-owner Wes Edens, who said in March that the organization would likely trade or extend the two-time MVP within the next year.

Ongoing uncertainty

Speculation about Antetokounmpo’s plans began last offseason and persisted through the trade deadline, amplified by differences over his return from a knee injury and displeasure with Edens’ earlier statements.

Haslam rejected suggestions of strained relations, calling the partnership “very positive” and noting Antetokounmpo’s role in securing Milwaukee’s first championship in 50 years. “We don’t know whether Giannis will stay with us or not, but we’ll work through that with Giannis in the coming weeks,” he said.

Leaguewide interest

Rival teams are watching closely. League sources have tied the Trail Blazers, Magic, Heat, Warriors, Timberwolves and Knicks to possible pursuit. Antetokounmpo has not requested a trade and remains open to staying in Milwaukee. He becomes extension-eligible in October, leaving the Bucks eager for an indication of his intentions before the June draft.

Coaching hire came with transparency

Haslam said the organization told newly hired head coach Taylor Jenkins that Antetokounmpo’s status was unresolved. “We just said, ‘Listen, he may or may not be with us, so don’t come because of that,’” Haslam explained.

The Bucks now face a tight timeline that could define the franchise’s direction for years to come.
