Washington Wizards guard Bilal Coulibaly had surgery Friday in New York City to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb, the team announced.
League sources told ESPN the 21-year-old is expected to remain sidelined into the regular season.
Coulibaly injured the thumb while playing for the French national team during FIBA EuroBasket. In six tournament games, he averaged 6.3 points and 4.3 rebounds.
Last season with Washington, the 6-foot-8 guard started 59 contests and posted averages of 12.3 points, 5 rebounds and 3.4 assists before a hamstring strain in early March ended his year.
Selected seventh overall by the Indiana Pacers in the 2023 NBA Draft and traded to the Wizards on draft night, Coulibaly appeared in 63 games as a rookie, 15 of them starts, and averaged 8.4 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.7 assists. His first season was cut short in March 2024 by a wrist fracture.
