The Denver Nuggets enter the summer with more than $201 million already committed to eight players for the 2026/27 campaign, tightening the franchise’s options as several rotation pieces approach free agency.
Limited Flexibility
According to The Athletic, the front office must navigate new contracts for Peyton Watson, Tim Hardaway Jr., Spencer Jones and Bruce Brown while exploring ways to upgrade a roster that finished its season Thursday night. Trade speculation now surrounds Aaron Gordon, Cameron Johnson and Julian Strawther, while Christian Braun and Zeke Nnaji are also listed as possible trade chips. Braun’s five-year, $125 million rookie-scale extension takes effect later this year, and Nnaji’s 2023 extension has been viewed as a negative asset, limiting each player’s market appeal.
Core Aging but Trusted
If no major moves are made, Denver will rely heavily on Nikola Jokić and Gordon—both entering their age-31 seasons—and Jamal Murray, who turns 30 during 2026/27. Executive vice president of player personnel Jon Wallace told The Athletic the organization is comfortable with that timeline. “We’re mature, but we are not old,” Wallace said, noting the club believes it blends experience with youth effectively.
Watson Headlines Free-Agent Priorities
Restricted free-agent wing Peyton Watson is considered the Nuggets’ top offseason priority, league sources told Jake Fischer of The Stein Line. Several cap-space teams are expected to pursue the 23-year-old, but Denver intends to match offers.
Johnson Hopes for Return
Cameron Johnson, traded from Phoenix to Brooklyn and then to Denver over the past few seasons, acknowledged after Thursday’s elimination that roster decisions are often out of his control. “For me personally, there’s a lot left to be done with this group,” he said, adding that he hopes to stay for another postseason run.
Valanciunas Weighs European Offer
Backup center Jonas Valanciunas holds a non-guaranteed $10 million salary for next season, making him a strong waiver candidate. Lithuanian outlet Krepsinis.net reports EuroLeague club Žalgiris Kaunas is prepared to offer the veteran a guaranteed two-year deal starting at €2 million should he become free, reviving interest the big man showed in a Panathinaikos move last summer.
Roster Needs Identified
ESPN’s Bobby Marks lists a reserve point guard and a rim-protecting backup big as primary offseason targets. Replacements for Hardaway and Brown would also be necessary if either player declines a team-friendly return.
The Nuggets now face a summer of difficult choices as they attempt to preserve a championship window under significant salary-cap pressure.
