NEW YORK — Former NBA center and current league ambassador Jason Collins is undergoing treatment for a brain tumor, his family announced Wednesday.

In a statement distributed by the NBA, the family of the 46-year-old asked for privacy while they focus on his health. “Jason and his family welcome your support and prayers,” the statement read.

Collins played 13 NBA seasons with the Nets, Grizzlies, Timberwolves, Hawks, Celtics and Wizards, establishing himself as a dependable defensive presence. He started at center for the New Jersey Nets during their 2003 trip to the NBA Finals alongside Jason Kidd.

In 2013, Collins became the first active NBA player—and the first athlete in any major American men’s professional league—to publicly come out as gay, a landmark moment in sports history. He retired in 2014 and has remained close to the league as an NBA ambassador.

Before turning professional, Collins and his twin brother Jarron starred at Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles and later at Stanford University, where Jason helped the Cardinal reach both the Elite Eight and the Final Four.

The NBA expressed support for Collins on social media, stating, “Our thoughts are with our friend and colleague, Jason Collins, and his family.”
