Rockets Rally Again, Send Series Back to Houston

The Houston Rockets avoided elimination for a second straight outing, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers 99-93 on Tuesday night to cut the Western Conference first-round series deficit to 3-2. The matchup shifts to Game 6 in Texas, where Houston will try to even the series.

Forward Jabari Smith Jr. scored 22 points, while Tari Eason supplied 18 off the bench. Center Alperen Şengün flirted with a triple-double as the Rockets logged their second consecutive win without injured star Kevin Durant.

Late in the fourth quarter, rookie guard Reed Sheppard sparked the decisive run. “One game at a time. Play at home, come back here,” Şengün said of the team’s approach.

Lakers’ Turnovers Prove Costly

The Lakers committed 15 turnovers and failed to capitalize on several late possessions. LeBron James finished with 25 points, while Austin Reaves returned from injury to post 22. Center Deandre Ayton added 18 points and 17 rebounds.

“You give credit where it’s due,” James said afterward. “They’ve played exceptionally well the last two games. We’ve got to answer the call.” Los Angeles still holds a 3-2 advantage but now faces added pressure heading to Houston.

Cunningham’s 45 Keeps Pistons Alive

In the Eastern Conference, the Detroit Pistons also staved off elimination, topping the Orlando Magic 116-109 to trim their series deficit to 3-2. Guard Cade Cunningham poured in 45 points, setting a franchise playoff record.

“Not everybody is blessed with these moments,” Cunningham said. “I just try to make the most of it.”

Orlando forward Paolo Banchero matched Cunningham with 45 points of his own in a duel that remained tight until Cunningham hit a fadeaway jumper inside the final minute.

“We come out swinging, kicking, scratching, clawing,” Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. Detroit will attempt to force a Game 7 when the series returns to Florida.
