LeBron James told ESPN’s Dave McMenamin he is fully prepared for life after basketball and intends to dedicate that period almost entirely to his family.

“Hell yeah,” the 40-year-old forward said when asked if he is ready for retirement. “My wife is going to get a lot of time because I’ve had to sacrifice not being with my wife a lot because I wanted to be the greatest player that ever played this game.”

James added that his daughter will also see more of him, noting he “spent the first 11 years of her life being away from her,” and said his youngest son, now in college, will benefit as well. “My family deserves all my time,” he emphasized.

After discussing his family, the four-time NBA champion acknowledged he intends to claim personal time, too. “And then, me. I deserve my time, too,” he said. “I’ll be happy when it’s all done to get away.”

James is in his 21st NBA season and remains one of the league’s most productive players. While he has not set a timetable for retirement, he made clear that whenever it arrives, he knows exactly how he will spend the next chapter.
