Five-star small forward Tyran Stokes announced on ESPN’s “NBA Tip-Off” Tuesday that he will suit up for the University of Kansas next season. The 6’7” prospect, ranked No. 1 in ESPN’s 2026 recruiting class, selected the Jayhawks over Kentucky and is widely projected as the early favorite to become the first overall pick in the 2027 NBA Draft.
Stokes owns three gold medals with USA Basketball, most recently capturing one at last summer’s FIBA U19 World Cup. Scouts cite his scoring punch, playmaking vision, rebounding ability and downhill attack as the pillars of his game.
Head coach Bill Self will now feature a potential No. 1 pick for a second straight year. Guard Darryn Peterson spent 2025-26 as a one-and-done at Kansas and is expected to be selected within the top three in June.
Updated 2026 Mock Drafts
With the initial early-entry deadline now passed, ESPN’s Jeremy Woo and The Athletic’s Sam Vecenie released updated 2026 mock drafts that mirror each other at the top:
- 1. AJ Dybantsa
- 2. Darryn Peterson
- 3. Cameron Boozer
- 4. Caleb Wilson
- 5-6. Darius Acuff and Keaton Wagler (Woo lists Acuff fifth; Vecenie flips the two)
- 7. Kingston Flemings
Details on Latest Lottery Reform Proposal
Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports outlined the NBA’s newest draft-lottery concept, which would soften the advantage for the league’s worst records. Under the proposal, the three teams with the poorest marks would have a 28 percent chance of landing a top-five pick and a 25 percent chance of falling to No. 12.
The plan includes language that allows the league to reduce lottery odds or relocate a pick altogether if it determines a club blatantly tanked. O’Connor warned that the format could still tempt teams to throw a play-in game, though the punishment clause aims to curb that behavior.
Writing for The Athletic, David Aldridge argued the proposal fails to address the core incentive behind tanking and moves the league further from a system that guarantees the worst teams access to the best prospects.
