Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander turned to Instagram on Tuesday, one day after his team finished a four-game sweep of the Phoenix Suns, to jab longtime friend and fellow Canadian Dillon Brooks.
The reigning MVP shared a photo carousel that ended with an edited image of Brooks’ Thunder opponent jersey reading “Cancun On 3,” a twist on the Houston guard’s No. 3. The caption read, “everybody wants to be villainous until the brooms come out & the dust settles & you realize who the villain is.”
The post referenced a sequence in Game 2 when Gilgeous-Alexander drained a jumper over Brooks, pointed at him and laughed while they retreated on defense. Gilgeous-Alexander finished that 120-107 victory with 37 points, while Brooks later accused him of “flopping and failing” to draw whistles and labeled him “frail.”
“Cancun on three” is a familiar NBA punch line signifying an early vacation after playoff elimination. The phrase traces back to the 1998 postseason, when Los Angeles Lakers guard Nick Van Exel broke a team huddle by shouting, “One, two, three … Cancun.”
Despite the social-media ribbing, the two Canadian national team teammates embraced on the court after Oklahoma City’s series-clinching win Monday night. Gilgeous-Alexander applauded Brooks’ development, calling it “impressive” how his friend has redefined his game. “All that villain stuff, it doesn’t faze me,” he said. “I know exactly who Dillon is.”
Across the four games, Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 33.8 points and eight assists. Brooks posted 26 points and six rebounds per contest for Phoenix, which now heads into the offseason—and, as Gilgeous-Alexander suggested, perhaps to Cancun.
