NEW YORK — Federal prosecutors told a judge on Monday that they intend to bring additional counts of sports bribery and honest services wire fraud against veteran NBA guard Terry Rozier by mid-May.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kaitlin Farrell disclosed the plan during a hearing in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. The government says newly developed evidence shows Rozier solicited and accepted a bribe as part of an alleged gambling scheme, positioning the NBA as the victim.
Rozier, 32, was already facing charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering tied to suspicious wagering on a March 23, 2023 game between the Charlotte Hornets and the New Orleans Pelicans. Monday’s session was scheduled to address Rozier’s motion to dismiss those initial counts, but the discussion was overtaken by news of the forthcoming superseding indictment. The judge did not rule on the dismissal request.
Defense attorney Jim Trusty said prosecutors alerted him to the possible new charges roughly two hours before the hearing. “Our motion argues they chose an invalid legal theory to prosecute Terry Rozier,” Trusty told ESPN afterward. “We’ll see what they attempt in the superseding indictment, but we expect to challenge it.”
Rozier is one of six men indicted in October 2025 over allegedly sharing inside information for betting purposes. Prosecutors assert that Rozier informed longtime friend and co-defendant Deniro Laster he would exit the March 23 contest early, enabling bettors who purchased the tip to wager on “under” propositions tied to Rozier’s statistics. The guard left after nine minutes with five points, two assists and four rebounds, and many of the bets cashed.
Former NBA player and assistant coach Damon Jones, another defendant in the case, is scheduled to plead guilty on Tuesday.
