The Minnesota Timberwolves said Monday that guard Anthony Edwards is “week-to-week” after an MRI showed a hyperextended left knee and bone bruise.

The announcement confirms earlier reports suggesting the 22-year-old will be sidelined for several weeks. Minnesota leads the Denver Nuggets 3-1 in their Western Conference first-round series.

Edwards was hurt late in the second quarter of Game 4 while contesting a jump shot. He landed awkwardly, and his left knee appeared to buckle before he remained on the floor holding the joint.

The setback comes on top of a lingering right knee problem that limited the third-year guard late in the regular season. Through four playoff games, Edwards is averaging 18.5 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists while shooting 35.8 percent from the field and 25.8 percent from three-point range.

Minnesota is already without starting guard Donte DiVincenzo, who sustained a torn right Achilles tendon earlier in Game 4. With both backcourt starters out, head coach Chris Finch is expected to expand roles for Ayo Dosunmu, Mike Conley, Bones Hyland and rookie Terrence Shannon Jr.

If the Timberwolves advance, the team anticipates Edwards could attempt a return at some point in the second round.
