San Antonio Spurs standout Victor Wembanyama said he would select Kobe Bryant ahead of franchise legend Tim Duncan when asked to choose between the two Hall of Famers during an Instagram Live session on September 10, 2025.
The 7-foot-4 center paused before answering the question—“Tim Duncan or Kobe?”—and eventually replied, “Probably Kobe… eh, actually, I don’t know,” in a clip shared by the Spurs’ official account and reposted by ClutchPoints.
Context
Wembanyama, now in his second NBA season, is widely regarded as Duncan’s heir in San Antonio. Duncan spent 19 years with the Spurs, collecting five championships and establishing himself as one of the greatest power forwards of all time.
Bryant, who also won five titles, teamed with Shaquille O’Neal to dominate the early 2000s for the Los Angeles Lakers. From 1999 to 2010, at least one of Bryant, O’Neal or Duncan appeared in every NBA Finals, and only twice did one of the three fail to win the championship.
Related Notes
Bryant and Duncan were inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame together in 2020. Bryant received a second posthumous honor earlier this year when the 2008 U.S. “Redeem Team” was enshrined; LeBron James called Bryant “the missing link” who pushed the roster to “lock in and reach another level.”
Whether Wembanyama’s brief preference will raise eyebrows in San Antonio remains to be seen, but the remark is now part of the public record.
