Orlando, Fla. — A three-minute montage of college highlight clips may have rescued the Orlando Magic’s postseason.

Head coach Jamahl Mosley assembled the video and played it last Friday morning, hours before the team’s decisive play-in meeting with the Charlotte Hornets at the Magic practice facility. The reel featured two NCAA tournament moments for every current Orlando player who had appeared in March Madness — from Jonathan Isaac’s dunk at Florida State to Desmond Bane’s deep three for TCU. It closed with Jalen Suggs’ 40-foot 2021 Final Four buzzer-beater for Gonzaga.

The screening came 36 hours after a draining 105-97 play-in defeat in Philadelphia and an overnight return flight that landed at 4 a.m. Players, exhausted and facing elimination, reacted with laughter and renewed energy. “Coach’s point was that we’ve all been in win-or-go-home games before,” forward Paolo Banchero said.

Immediate payoff against Charlotte

That night, Orlando throttled the Hornets 121-90, clinching the Eastern Conference’s No. 8 seed. Banchero posted 25 points, six assists and five rebounds on 9-for-17 shooting, while the Magic’s defense forced two first-quarter shot-clock violations and limited Charlotte to 39 percent overall.

Game 1 shocker in Detroit

Three days later, the Magic stunned the top-seeded Detroit Pistons 112-101 at Little Caesars Arena. Banchero scored 23 points through three quarters before facilitating late, and Franz Wagner added 11 of his 19 points in the fourth period. Detroit All-Star center Jalen Duren finished with eight points and seven rebounds. Game 2 is Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Mosley also mixed in archival footage of assistant coaches God Shammgod (Providence) and Lionel Chalmers (Xavier), drawing what Banchero called “hearty laughs” from the roster. The coach said he used the clips to remind his players of past success: “Just wait a week and the narrative always changes.”

Orlando heads home with a 1-0 series lead and, according to Suggs, a sharper sense of identity. “You remember where you came from,” the guard said. “That video did exactly that.”
