San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama has been placed in the NBA’s concussion protocol, the team confirmed after the Portland Trail Blazers took Game 2 from the Spurs.

The designation means the 7-foot-4 rookie must clear a series of medical benchmarks before he can return to the court. No timetable was given for his recovery, and the Spurs offered no additional details on when the injury occurred.

Wembanyama’s absence leaves San Antonio without its leading scorer, rebounder, and rim protector as the matchup with Portland continues. The Trail Blazers’ victory evened the early postseason series, shifting momentum to Portland heading into Game 3.

The NBA’s concussion protocol typically requires players to be symptom-free at rest and during exertion, then receive clearance from both team medical personnel and an independent neurologist before rejoining game action.

San Antonio has not announced who will start in Wembanyama’s place.
