The Miami Heat are prepared to consider a contract extension for veteran wing Norman Powell once the 2025/26 campaign is underway, according to Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald.

Powell, 32, is entering the final season of the five-year, $90 million pact he signed with Portland in 2021 and will earn approximately $20.5 million this year. Under league rules, he can agree to an extension any time before June 30; without a new deal, he would become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Miami acquired the former UCLA standout in July through a three-team trade that sent Kyle Anderson and Kevin Love to Utah. The move initially pushed the Heat into the luxury tax, though the club later moved Haywood Highsmith to exit tax territory.

Powell is coming off one of his best seasons, posting 21.8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists across 60 starts for the Los Angeles Clippers in 2024/25. He logged 32.6 minutes per game while shooting 48.4 percent from the field, 41.8 percent from three and 80.4 percent at the line, all career highs in scoring, minutes and three-pointers made (179).

Looking ahead, Miami’s cap sheet clears roughly $35 million after 2025/26 when Terry Rozier and Simone Fontecchio come off the books. Decisions also loom on Tyler Herro, eligible for an extension between October 1 and opening night, and Andrew Wiggins, who holds a player option for 2026/27.

The front office is expected to evaluate Powell’s fit during the early portion of the season before moving forward with any long-term proposal.
