Cost-Conscious Owner Tom Dundon Reportedly Unbothered by Backlash as Blazers Enter Playoffs

Portland Trail Blazers owner Tom Dundon is showing little concern over criticism of the organization’s tightened budget practices during the NBA postseason, according to a report by The Athletic’s Jason Quick.

League and team sources told the publication that Dundon, who bought the franchise earlier this season, has ordered across-the-board spending reductions while the Blazers pursue their first playoff appearance since 2021. “He doesn’t care what’s said about him,” one league source said.

Hotel Costs Scrutinized Before Play-In Game

The new approach became noticeable ahead of Portland’s play-in contest in Phoenix. Interim head coach Tiago Splitter reportedly had to manage staff frustration after non-player, non-coach personnel were instructed to check out of the team hotel early to avoid late fees. The decision complicated pre-game routines for employees such as the team’s massage therapist, who still needed workspace with players.

Portland won the game, but the episode highlighted the club’s shifting priorities. “Why are we wasting money? Let’s think about this prudently,” a team source said of the directive.

Smaller Travel Parties, Re-examined Practices

Quick’s report indicates the Blazers have reduced travel party sizes and reevaluated several long-standing operating procedures. Some around the league view the moves as disrespectful to staff, while others note Dundon employed similar tactics after purchasing the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes—and ultimately saw on-ice success.

Willing to Spend on Roster Upgrades

Despite belt-tightening in support areas, Dundon is said to be prepared to enter the luxury tax to acquire key players. “All he cares about is what is good for the team and what makes the team win,” a Blazers source told The Athletic.

Outside observers remain skeptical. “He’s already established that he’s very cheap,” another league source said. Dundon, by all indications, is not working to change that perception.
