Golden State is preparing for the possibility that head coach Steve Kerr will step away rather than sign a new deal, according to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Monte Poole. Kerr is expected to meet with owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. in the coming days to decide his future, with a resolution anticipated sooner rather than later.
Sources told Poole that money will not determine the outcome. “They could offer Steve $25 million a year and I doubt that alone would make a difference,” one league insider said.
Melton’s outlook
The Warriors spent most of the season assuming guard DeAnthony Melton would decline his $3.5 million player option, report Nick Friedell and Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic. An inconsistent finish, however, may lower the 27-year-old’s market value and improve Golden State’s chances of keeping him with Non-Bird rights. “I’d most definitely like to stay,” Melton said Monday, adding that contract matters are “up to my agent and upstairs.”
Star-chasing on hold?
Before February’s deadline, Golden State reportedly offered multiple future first-round picks for Milwaukee forward Giannis Antetokounmpo and was the most aggressive suitor for Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard. One team source told Friedell and Thompson the front office has no intention of sacrificing several future assets to load up on veterans for the 2026/27 season. Marc Stein of The Stein Line notes that reluctance could grow if Kerr departs.
Free-agency notes
Restricted free agent Quinten Post said Monday he hopes to re-sign with the Warriors. The center, rehabbing a foot injury, believes he is about two weeks from returning to on-court work and intends to play for the Dutch national team this summer.
Veteran big man Al Horford elaborated Monday on his decision to leave Boston last offseason for Golden State, reports Brian Robb of MassLive. Horford holds a $6 million player option for 2026/27.
The Warriors expect clarity on Kerr’s status within days, a decision that could shape every other roster move this summer.
