Beijing, Sept. 9, 2025 — LeBron James refuted reports that he authored an opinion piece for Chinese state media, stating that remarks attributed to him were drawn from informal press gatherings during his current tour of China.
An earlier Associated Press story claimed the Los Angeles Lakers star had penned an op-ed, prompting criticism from several conservative outlets and the Hong Kong–based South China Morning Post. Sources told ESPN and other organizations that James merely answered questions from reporters at multiple stops, and those comments were later compiled into an article.
“Basketball is not only a sport, but also a bridge that connects us,” James said during one of the sessions. Xinhua, China’s official news agency, also quoted him in Chengdu, where he thanked local fans for what he called a “humbling” reception.
The visit comes one month before the NBA stages two preseason games in Macao on Oct. 10 and 12 between the Phoenix Suns and the Brooklyn Nets. The league continues efforts to rebuild its profile in mainland China after a 2019 dispute involving then-Houston Rockets executive Daryl Morey stalled NBA activities in the country.
James’s trip coincides with renewed trade negotiations between Washington and Beijing. President Donald Trump has threatened steep tariffs on Chinese goods but agreed last month to a 90-day delay while both sides pursue a broader agreement that could culminate in a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this year or early next.
Entering his 23rd NBA season, the four-time MVP said he plans to use international tours to promote the sport. “I just wanted to pour [the support] back to the community and to this country,” he told Chinese media.
