Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell said he hopes to stay in Cleveland for the long haul and is willing to discuss a new contract when he becomes extension-eligible this summer.
Speaking with Sam Amick of The Athletic, the 29-year-old All-Star repeated his desire to remain with the franchise. “I love Cleveland. I want to play here for as long as I can,” Mitchell told the outlet. He added that both he and his fiancée, singer and actress Coco Jones, feel comfortable in the city.
Mitchell is set to earn $50.1 million in 2026-27 and holds a $53.8 million player option for 2027-28. Beginning this offseason, he can sign a four-year deal projected at $277 million.
Denies Forcing Harden Trade
Amick asked Mitchell about reports suggesting he used his contract status to push Cleveland toward acquiring James Harden. Mitchell rejected that characterization. “People can’t fathom that I’m really enjoying it here,” he said, describing the trade discussions as a front-office decision rather than player pressure.
Eyes on First Championship
Both Mitchell and Harden, longtime playoff participants who have yet to win a title, believe this season represents their strongest opportunity. “We know what we’ve got to do,” Mitchell said, noting plans to stagger minutes with Harden and emphasizing the need to integrate teammates such as Sam Merrill, Jarrett Allen, Evan Mobley, Max Strus, Keon Ellis and Dennis Schröder.
The interview also touched on Mitchell’s pre-existing Adidas connection with Harden and how he learned of the Clippers trade talks that eventually delivered Harden to Cleveland.
Mitchell concluded that the Cavaliers’ willingness to “do whatever it takes” reinforces his commitment to the organization.
