Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick told reporters Tuesday that guards Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves remain “out indefinitely” and will not be re-evaluated before Game 1 of the team’s first-round series against the Houston Rockets on Saturday.
Doncic suffered a Grade 2 hamstring strain on April 2, while Reaves incurred a Grade 2 oblique strain in the same contest. Both injuries generally require at least four weeks of recovery, putting their availability for the opening round in serious doubt.
Doncic is expected to return to the United States later this week after receiving treatment in Spain. Reaves continues his rehabilitation in Los Angeles. Redick stressed that neither player is close to game action.
With the backcourt depleted, the Lakers have leaned on LeBron James and Luke Kennard for primary ball-handling duties. Over the final four games of the regular season, James averaged 11.0 assists, while Kennard recorded 6.4 assists across five appearances after the injuries.
Guard Marcus Smart, who came back Friday following a nine-game absence caused by a right ankle sprain, is also expected to take on a larger role against Houston.
