The Los Angeles Lakers are evaluating trade options for a two-way wing who can bolster both their offense and defense, according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line.
Stein reported on September 8 that the front office is willing to make a move if it believes the addition would raise the team’s ceiling. League sources told Stein the organization is not interested in reshuffling the roster simply for the sake of change and will wait until a suitable opportunity emerges.
Earlier in the offseason, Los Angeles was reportedly focused on acquiring only expiring contracts to maintain maximum salary-cap flexibility for the summer of 2027. Stein now notes that stance has softened, opening the door for deals that extend beyond the coming season.
Miami Heat forward Andrew Wiggins is viewed around the league as the type of player who fits the Lakers’ criteria, though it remains uncertain whether Miami would consider moving the former No. 1 overall pick. Wiggins is set to earn roughly $28.2 million in 2025-26 and holds a $30.2 million player option for 2026-27.
Interest in Wiggins reportedly intensified after Luka Doncic signed a three-year extension with the Dallas Mavericks in early August. Los Angeles had previously checked on Wiggins’ availability, but, according to multiple reports earlier this summer, balked at the Heat’s initial asking price. Dan Woike of The Athletic indicated in mid-July that the Lakers were not pursuing the 6-foot-7 wing at that time, weeks before Doncic’s new deal.
For now, the Lakers are expected to monitor the market while maintaining flexibility should Miami—or another team—elect to trim payroll before the season.
