San Antonio, TX — San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama cleared the NBA’s 65-game requirement for major postseason awards during Friday’s 139-120 victory over the Dallas Mavericks, producing 40 points and 13 rebounds for his fifth 40-point effort of the season.
The milestone keeps the 20-year-old center in contention for honors such as Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year. Wembanyama had been listed with a rib injury and acknowledged he likely would have rested had he already met the threshold. “I probably would have sat,” he told reporters after the game.
Debating the Rule
Asked about the league’s 65-game standard, Wembanyama called the concept reasonable but noted it does not always capture a player’s true impact. He cited Detroit’s Cade Cunningham and Dallas’ Luka Dončić as examples of stars who could miss recognition despite significant contributions.
The 7-foot-4 standout then calculated alternative scenarios aloud, comparing total minutes rather than appearances. “If a guy plays 50 games at 35 minutes, that’s 1,750 minutes,” he said. “Another guy might play 75 games at 20 minutes, and that’s only 1,500.”
Wembanyama suggested a participation rate of 75 percent of regular-season contests—about 62 games—as a more logical benchmark. He conceded the rule is unlikely to change this year but welcomed his new eligibility status.
With the Spurs officially eliminated from playoff contention, Wembanyama’s season averages and end-of-season accolades will now be judged under the current guidelines.
