The San Antonio Spurs enter the 2025-26 season with three ball-dominant guards after a pair of major roster moves over the past eight months.

Point guard De’Aaron Fox, acquired from Sacramento in January, signed a four-year maximum extension in August, the first day league rules allowed a new deal following the trade. He now joins reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle and No. 2 overall draft choice Dylan Harper in a crowded backcourt; all three prefer to initiate offense and are still developing consistent three-point range.

Frontcourt built around Wembanyama

San Antonio also reshaped the front line around 7-foot-4 centerpiece Victor Wembanyama, who missed the final two months of 2024-25 with a blood clot in his right shoulder. The club:

  • Signed center Luke Kornet to a four-year, $41 million contract, with the first two seasons guaranteed.
  • Traded Malaki Branham, Blake Wesley and a draft pick to Washington for veteran big man Kelly Olynyk, a 37.1% career three-point shooter.

Additional offseason moves

First-year head coach Mitch Johnson, who took over after Gregg Popovich suffered a stroke last fall, was formally retained in the spring with backing from players, management and Popovich himself.

The Spurs added another rookie in June, selecting Arizona wing Carter Bryant at No. 14. Though Bryant struggled in Summer League action, the organization views him as a potential three-and-D contributor.

The roster currently includes 13 guaranteed contracts, leaving one open spot. Team officials are considering an additional frontcourt option, with former Spur Charles Bassey among the names still available in free agency.

Potential transactions ahead

Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell are regarded as the most likely trade candidates should San Antonio seek further changes during the season. Forward Jeremy Sochan and veteran swingman Harrison Barnes are eligible for contract extensions.

For now, the Spurs will attempt to balance an ambitious guard trio with a revamped frontcourt as they continue to build around Wembanyama.
