Former NBA center and current ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins challenged the Cleveland Cavaliers’ toughness and spotlighted Donovan Mitchell as the league’s most scrutinized player ahead of the playoffs.
Speaking on NBA Countdown on April 8, 2026, Perkins said “the whispers around the NBA” suggest Cleveland is “soft,” joking that the team is “sponsored by Hostess cupcakes because they creamy in the middle,” while specifically pointing to forward Evan Mobley.
Perkins also argued that Mitchell faces unparalleled postseason expectations. “A Donovan Mitchell–led team has never, ever made it to the conference finals,” he said. “He will go down as one of the greatest regular-season players if he don’t get this done.”
Playoff Position and Roster Stakes
Cleveland enters the regular-season finale at 51-29, fourth in the Eastern Conference. If standings hold, the Cavaliers would open the first round against the Atlanta Hawks.
Local reporter Jimmy Watkins of Cleveland.com added that a failure to reach the conference finals could trigger major roster changes. “If the Cavs don’t make the conference finals, nobody is safe,” Watkins said, noting the possibility that the club might “move on from Donovan.”
Mitchell becomes extension-eligible this offseason, while guard James Harden is expected to decline his player option, test free agency, and “presumably re-sign with Cleveland,” according to the report.
The Cavaliers’ core of Mitchell, Mobley and center Jarrett Allen has yet to advance past the second round, keeping the organization under close league-wide watch as the postseason approaches.
