Georgia advanced to the EuroBasket quarterfinals for the first time on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2025, defeating heavily favored France 80-70 in Berlin.

Kamar Baldwin and Tornike Shengelia paced Georgia with 24 points apiece, and Shengelia added eight rebounds. Orlando Magic center Goga Bitadze supplied eight points. France, which entered the tournament among the title favorites, was led by Sylvain Francisco with 14 points and Guerschon Yabusele with 12.

“We are happy to be here, but we are not satisfied,” Shengelia said after the win. Georgia, coached by Ilias Zouros, will face Finland in Wednesday’s quarterfinal. Finland eliminated Serbia on Saturday.

France shot just 35 % from the field. Head coach Frédéric Fauthoux pointed to missed easy opportunities, saying, “This is basketball.” The French roster was thin in the frontcourt after Vincent Poirier withdrew with a right knee injury and Victor Wembanyama, Mathias Lessort, and Rudy Gobert were unavailable.

Georgian forward Sandro Mamukelashvili told reporters that France’s absences would not have changed the outcome. “I wish them nothing but the best, but right now I can text Victor Wembanyama and tell him we just beat France, and it’s too bad he was not here because we would beat them with him too,” the former Spurs center said.

Poland tops Bosnia and Herzegovina

In Sunday’s earlier elimination game, Poland secured a 90-82 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina. Former NBA guard Jordan Loyd poured in 28 points, while Mateusz Ponitka recorded 19 points and 11 rebounds. Poland will meet unbeaten Turkey on Tuesday in the quarterfinals.
