Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Greg St. Jean said the presence and work habits of LeBron James have influenced Luka Doncic as the 26-year-old guard prepares for his first season in purple and gold.
Speaking to BasketNews while accompanying Doncic during EuroBasket, St. Jean noted that spending time alongside the four-time MVP has pushed the Slovenian star to overhaul his conditioning.
“When you’re around elite players, iron sharpens iron,” St. Jean told the outlet. “Luka has always admired LeBron, and having them together is motivating for both. LeBron is up at 5 a.m. working on his body, and everyone else sees that.”
The Lakers enter training camp with new head coach JJ Redick stressing that every player must report in “championship shape.” Doncic, coming off a longer summer break than usual, arrived at national-team duty noticeably leaner and has maintained that fitness through EuroBasket play.
James, 40, is set to begin his 23rd NBA season after averaging All-NBA numbers a year ago. Team officials believe his daily regimen offers a blueprint for longevity that Doncic hopes to follow.
EuroBasket Keeps Doncic in Game Shape
By staying active with Slovenia, Doncic has carried his new conditioning into competition. Earlier in the tournament he became the country’s all-time leading scorer, a milestone reached before his 27th birthday.
The Lakers expect the guard-forward duo to anchor a roster aiming to return to championship contention. Team staff believe Doncic’s improved fitness will help avoid the nagging ailments that bothered him last season and keep both stars fresh for the postseason.
