The NBA’s Rookie of the Year conversation has tightened to a duel between Dallas Mavericks forward Cooper Flagg and Charlotte Hornets guard Kon Knueppel, according to a recent straw poll of 100 media voters.
Flagg, the No. 1 overall pick, delivered a record-setting 51-point performance in Friday’s loss at Orlando, becoming the youngest player—and first teenager—in league history to score 50 or more in a game. The 19-year-old is averaging 20.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.2 steals and 0.9 blocks, leading all rookies in scoring and ranking near the top in every major category. If those numbers hold, he would join Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Luka Doncic as the only rookies since the 1976 ABA-NBA merger to post at least 20 points, six rebounds and four assists per contest.
Despite those milestones, Knueppel is the current favorite in ESPN’s poll, receiving 80 of 100 first-place votes. The former No. 4 pick has appeared in 12 more games and logged 227 additional minutes than Flagg, averaging 18.8 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 31.5 minutes. His shooting has been historic: Knueppel leads the NBA with 264 made three-pointers while hitting 43.1 percent from beyond the arc, the best rookie long-range season on record.
Team success is also influencing voters. Charlotte, 42-36 after an 11-23 start, currently sits eighth in the Eastern Conference and is positioned to make its first playoff trip since 2016. Knueppel’s emergence alongside LaMelo Ball, Brandon Miller and Miles Bridges has been central to that turnaround. Dallas, meanwhile, dropped to 24-53 and shifted into rebuild mode as injuries mounted around Flagg.
Supporters of the Mavericks rookie note that recent precedent favors elite individual production over team record: Victor Wembanyama captured the 2024 award for San Antonio despite a 22-60 season. Still, Flagg trails Knueppel in the latest polling, leaving voters to decide between unprecedented shooting efficiency and all-around statistical versatility.
With two weeks left in the regular season, the race remains open as both first-year standouts aim to solidify their cases.
