Golden State came close to acquiring Kawhi Leonard at this season’s trade deadline, according to multiple league sources cited by Tim Kawakami of The San Francisco Standard.

Kawakami reported that the Warriors and the Los Angeles Clippers had a general framework in place for a deal, but the Clippers ultimately pulled out. Sources told Kawakami the agreement was “reasonably close” before talks collapsed.

The pursuit might resume in the offseason. Those familiar with the organization’s plans expect Golden State to search for another high-profile player, with Leonard remaining a primary target.

Leonard, a two-time NBA Finals MVP, is on track to enter the 2026-27 season with an expiring $50.3 million contract, though that figure could be affected by the NBA’s ongoing investigation into his relationship with the bankrupt financial firm Aspiration.

Coaching Status

Kawakami added that he anticipates head coach Steve Kerr will be back next season, noting that owner Joe Lacob, general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr., and star guard Stephen Curry all favor his return. Kawakami labeled this more observation than formal report.

League Inquiry Continues

The NBA’s investigation into Leonard’s ties to Aspiration is still in progress, and ESPN’s Baxter Holmes reported there is no timetable for its completion.
